English widow, Jean Valeix, is the owner of a vineyard in the French wine village of Saint-Emilion. But her cherished château is struggling to sell its produce. A handful of people – among them a charming middle-aged Scotsman, a jaw-droppingly beautiful girl and a talented autistic boy – will change her life completely. But not all her visitors are who they claim to be. All she needs to do is find out who’s telling the truth, save her business from bankruptcy and solve a murder. Only then might she discover that sometimes even good things come in threes.
Viticulture and romance, mental health and murder all tumble, along with the cabernets and merlots, into the fermenting vat of this dark but uplifting novel.
"a real page turner of a story full of teasing clues and cliff-hanging suspense...a triumph of a little book, immensely readable and with the added interest of its back-story for the wine buff. Highly recommended." - Tom Cannavan, wine journalist
"This is a book I wanted to finish and yet was enjoying the journey so much that I forced myself to ration the chapters to make it last longer. I just hope this is the first of many such books from this very talented writer with a mastery of bitter-sweet tales." - Peter F May, Wine Editor, BellaOnline
"...full-bodied, spicy with fascinating and fruity overtones." - John Walker, Author of The Jagermeister's Apprentice
Patrick Hilyer, author of the award-winning wine travel guide French Vineyards, lives and works in Normandy, France.
This fifth edition includes the new cover and title and an extract from the second book in the Saint-Emilion Vineyard Mystery series - A Devil in the Grape.

Although there is a mysterious character in this tale, it is not a whodunit or thriller, but essentially a love story between a lonely woman and a vineyard. British Jean inherited the vineyard and several friends from her French husband, killed in an accident, and her father-in-law who died shortly after his son. After many years of working the vines alone, she meets Andrew who is eager to help her, and Aimée, a mystery and a catalyst. The story tells the events of Jean's life triggered by these meetings. The people are all interesting, the plot line firm and logical, and the whole book is extremely readable.

The Grape Joy A SaintEmilion Vineyard Mystery Book 1 edition by Patrick Hilyer Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
I bought this book on a visit (highly recommended) to the Chateau Feely winery on our trip to the Dordogne region of France this fall. I very much enjoyed Caro's book and look forward to reading the others. Theirs is a wonderful story of taking an old property in need of care to a going concern, and now I am on the hunt for organic and biodynamic wines.
Patrick Hilyer has combined a good mystery story with the personal challenges in the life of a British woman struggling to make a life for herself running a winery in France. He has a knack for a great turn of phrase and along the way, the reader can learn a great deal about vineyards and wine making. A fine read.
The Xmas present arrived and Broke the Grape's Joy was my "first read". It is also the first fiction book that I have probably read for two years - and what a good choice! I thoroughly enjoyed it and it made a seemless introduction to .
The author combined eloquence with an easy reading style with an ability to draw the reader into wanting to read on, and the attention to detail is evident - good to see Le Mont St Michel got a mention, and of course the Normandy rain! The underlying themes of wine, love, pain and tragedy make the words spring from the page and to misquote Brecht "old and new wisdom mix admirably."
From a psychological point of view the process and pain of grief, Asperger's Syndrome, and terminal illness etc are all accurately and sensitively used and add a human dimension to the book that many will recognise in themselves.
I love the twists in the book ..... I'm wondering what is left in store for the sequel which I am eagerly awaiting!
I'm sure Broke the Grape's Joy will please a wide readership from wine buffs to lovers of "who dunnits" as well of course as the large group of English-speaking expats in France and those in the UK who love France and all it has to offer - this book really adds to this particular genre of literature - watch out Peter Mayle and George East!
It was good insite into the winery business, from start to finish. Interesting character development, though I wasn't crazy about the ending.
As a parent of an autistic child the book description really caught my attention. Normally I prefer a faster paced story, however, as I got into it I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this book. I am very much looking forward to the sequel.
This was a new author for me and I really enjoyed his book. Would read others in the series
Jeanne, or Jean (depending on whether she is in England or France) owns a struggling vineyard in the village of Saint-Emilion. As much as she loves the vineyard she has real concerns about keeping it. First her husband is killed tragically in an auto accident, and then her father in law dies, leaving her alone to care for the vineyard. But she is no victim, and gets on with the work at hand.
Andrew enters her world unexpectedly and everything changes, and not all for the good. Is he the man she thinks he is? What about the local student Aimee who came to intern at the vineyard?
Unlike many mystery stories that rush from scene to scene with action, this novel is slower paced, and that perfectly sets the mood and setting of this book. I honestly fell in love with Jeanne, and Andrew. They were sensitively written and definitely true to life. Archie was a wonderful addition - and I loved the wine descriptions that he uses.
Patrick Hilyer brings a unique industry to life. I love wine, but know next to nothing about the process to make it. I loved learning some more about this fine process from an expert.
I cannot wait for 2013 when the sequel is released!
